Reminder APP
This APP is designed for the elderly or people with a bad memory. It is a tool to help the patient recall and complete a task.
Role: Lead UX designer for hypothetical product
The Problem
Alzheimers and dementia patients have a hard time remembering essential tasks.
The Solution
My goal is to make life easier for the person with impaired memory and caretaker.
UNDERSTANDING THE USER
User Persona
Marge is an Elderly woman that likes to be independent and needs her husband to do the essential task on his own because she needs time to focus on her own task.
Age: 80
Education: Associates
Hometown: Medford MA
Family: Sons and Daughters
Occupation: Retired
User Journey Map
After Creating a persona, I made a User Journey Map depicting the user's experiences. This gave me an idea of some of the user's problems.
Research Summarization
Through my research, it was clear that caretakers struggled to guide their loved ones throughout the day. They forget to do essential tasks like brushing their teeth, putting on clothing, and taking medication. I learned that there are techniques that caretakers use to care for their loved ones. They leave notes and items in obvious spots for them to find, but the most effective form of instruction is hearing the caretaker's voice. Their loved one's voice is something that is familiar to them, so they are more inclined to listen.
Starting The Design
Paper Wireframes
I did a quick ideation sketch exercise to figure out feature or layouts to put in the app. The goal was to addressed the users needs and to add features lacking in other apps.
Digital Wireframes
For the digital wireframe, I wanted to focus on making the app for someone with low tech literacy. I did this by making the app easy to navigate and read.
Low Fidelity
To prepare for usability testing, I created a Low Fidelity prototype to show how a user will go about making a reminder.
Key Pages
page1: Used to see and edit reminders
pages 2 & 3: Used to create reminders
page 4: Confirmation that reminder was created
Usability Findings
After creating Wireframes and a Prototype, the next step was to do an unmoderated usability Study. I asked 2 participants to complete different tasks in the app. I gained valuable information from the test that helped me improve the APP.
Main Findings From Usability Study
The calendar selection is hard to see and navigate.
Confirmation is needed when a reminder is created.
Need an option to repeat vocal reminder
Refining Design
Mobile Design Changes
High contrasting colors and icons were added to help guide the user. Also, a calendar was added to help the user stay organized and look at reminders further out. I also changed the date selector to a swipe and tap. This feature allows the user to move through dates quickly and the large buttons are easier to tap.

After Usability Study
The goal was to organize the information in a neat and hierarchical structure to make the page readable. The fields were expanded to emphasize their importance and to make them easier to tap. A repeat vocal reminder was also added to account for the user not hearing the reminder the first time.

High Fidelity
This video visually demonstrates how a user would interact with the APP.
Impact:
This app will help the user remember tasks, and by retaining the task, their lives and the lives of their loved ones will be easier.
What I learned:
I learned that it's good to look at a problem from multiple perspectives. In this case, it was important to look at the perspective of the patient and the caretaker.
